I’ll be honest, I don’t remember how exactly I came across Womprat, but I am glad I did. Hailing from Sydney, Australia this one man effort impressed me from the first time I heard Airfreight. His tracks have become a regular mainstay in Crookhaven live sets as of late, so those of you who have been out to hear us recently have probably already banged your head to a few of his tracks.

Today is Earth Day and to celebrate we are spotlighting: CORNFLOWER, the lean green beat machine.  Nestled in the northwest corner of the country Cornflower has mastered the essence of rockapella with his fun and energetic live performances. Building an array of soundscapes using foot pedals to loop beats and harmonies, this one man jamband takes elements of hip hop, drum n bass, funk, and whatever else and blends them into an experience that is truly unique amidst the current electronica craze.  His website:  Cornflowermusic.com is loaded with info, news, links, a podcast, show dates and most importantly his new L.P.

With all the remix competitions going on out there right now, we figured we would dip our fingers in the pot.  Southeast Hip Hop crew: Deaf Judges have put together a remix pack for their song “TV Thieves” which you can check out on their myspace player HERE.  Deaf Judges are looking to put one lucky remixer/producers track on their forthcoming remix E.P.  released on EC ruins records.

Netlabel Mix

Here’s a lil snip from Eclectic Methods performance from SXSW to tie back into part 1 of this post.  Now I get to share some other really authentic and interesting associates of Eclectic Method, for example NYCWTF a party? a blog? a shirt? a bunch of lulz? actually yes its all that. Eclectic Method is half of another project called CPR (collective permanent record) which is an interactive online site where you can ‘remix’ loops of  Obama’s inauguration speech, record them and share with friends.  The other half of CPR is Dark Igloo who seem to be the half that is responsible for the ‘on-line interactivity’.

I have produced, promoted, and performed a few events so I know how important proper management and marketing is, and behind every successful artist and organization there is a innovative and creative manager and/or team.  Justin Bolognino is a true modern artist creating art with many forms of technology.  “Eco-Antagonist”, “integral philosopher” and “recycled-media innovator” are self-described terms trying to convey the scope of what a person like him does.  Learned Evolution is the agency run by him and his wife, and other than Eclectic Method Justin helped design the worlds first L.E.E.D certified bowling alley called : Brooklyn Bowl which opens this spring and looks hella fun!  Organizing ‘twestivals’, producing multi-media events, managing next level A/V DJs, and still maintaining a personal Blog……that must take some ego.

So that wraps up just a small flavor of some cool people doing some cool things in other parts of the country. We have been contacting some other great talent all over the globe and are very excited to share and expose as much great stuff out there as we can. Not only music, but painters, graphic artists, thinkers, makers, doers, movers and shakers too!

Last Saturday rightClique invaded Lenny’s Bar for Bass Rec. 6  It was our first field trip away from The Atlanta Bench, and we had a splendid time.  In a sort of fusion between Cerebral Sabbath and Bass Recreation Society the night was kicked off by Dharmatronix .  Dtron dropped some massive self produced tunes filled with sporadic, glitch-hopped beats and layered with sultry synths on top of bottomless basslines…

Next up another rightClique heart throb Proximal dropped an indulgent dubstep set that was filled with lusciousness, borderline on what we would expect from his counterpart Distal (which im sure had nothing to do with the fact he had just arrived back in ATL from WMC), but great and powerful none the less.. Larvae main man : Matt Jeans was next on the scene an boy oh boy, what a treat! Complete with his own visuals Larvae traveled from the haunting to the emerging  in a a brilliant soundscape of self produced electronic wonder.  I wish I had the video to share with you all as well as it was truly a piece of enchanting artwork, with images of war, people of the world, suburban mediocrity, and even clips of Matt himself superimposed on the white house lawn with a ghettoblaster in hand nodding to the beat with an hint of irony in his eyes.  rightClique extends a big thanks to Matt Jeans for his contribution to our social bass recreation activities.

To close out the night I took on my DJ alias DANCEFORMERS to close the evening in true BRS fashion. Mixing up a genre busting blend of huge tunes from all sorts of genres such as:  dubstep, bassline, fidget to crunk, and even some dub and throwback hip-hop joints for good measure. I also mixed in a new track i’m currently developing under a new alias: WONKY KONG

We have thoroughly enjoyed the last 6 months of what started as a goofy idea to give us all a forum in which to display our musical taste and talents, and ended up turning into a real community of people all sharing the same love of low frequencies and freedom on the dance floor.  It is great to have a place to re-create a social bond with bass. I pray that the music heals our deepest wounds…..MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT TO ALL!

If you know me by now, you probably think that I live, eat, breathe, sleep, repeat minimal. While that may be true, I think it can also be said that I love many other forms of music. Say Disco House? Ok, while that may not be a huge leap in musical boundaries, I think we can all agree that the following journeys through house music get us groovin. SmartBar in Chicago threw a party on the last day of WMC this year with Potty Mouth Music and these recordings are just the icing on the cake for what the party actually was. 7+ hours of funky, disco house to the more techy side of house…all of it wonderful.

Computers have finally earned their place on the stage. It started as most of the hallmarks do, with oppositional force. The front lit face of a laptop player peering into the monitor will never be the same as watching a guitar player with their eyes closed and the awkward yet sublime expressions contorting their face as they pinch notes off the wooden neck, but a guitar will never be able to make the sounds a laptop can. Computers and laptops are responsible for the amazing explosion of music that has occurred in the last 10 years.  Once anyone with enough money and technical savvy could re-create a music studio from their bedroom, the game changed forever.  Now the Internet is crawling with so many new sonic creations and re-creations, net labels, torrents, videos, and streams that the old adages “DJs aren’t musicians, or laptops don’t belong on a stage” are no longer sufficient when trying to explain to someone why your so blindly “behind the times”.

Karl White aka Metrognome, is a musician and the computer is his instrument. He not only “designs one of a kind Reaktor 5 ensembles” he makes them available for download on his blog so other sound designers can get off on some serious next levelness.  Using a touchscreen tablet interface Karl has performed with many acts and contributed to numerous projects such as the Lush and Techy Drum n Bass outfit x23 or the mind(and circuit)bending Not Breathing.

Metrognome is also 1/2 of Genome.  The other 50% being rightClique’s own Captain Crunk aka Genetic.  Genome’s freshman album was recorded in about a week in 06 and mastered by Josh Eustis of TTA acclaim. Metrognome has also contributed some slammin mixes to the Pirate Booty Podcast.  Point is: dude is ill! He will be here all the way from Tucson Arizona on March 28th for Bass Recreation Society 6 so you are gonna feel pretty goofy if you don’t make it out to see and hear something amazing. It will also be his first trip to Atlanta so we need ya’ll to help us show him how we get down…

Well, some of you may or may not know but the reason for a lot of the recent quietness around these parts is that a number of us have ducked into our new studio space on the east side of ATL to begin focusing our efforts a little more closely on production. Do not think our events are taking a back seat however; as many of you know BRS6 coming up at Lenny’s at the end of the month promises to be huge as we move the event from The Atlanta Bench to Lenny’s Bar.

In the meantime however, Rowland and I have been working hard on stepping up our game for Crookhaven and despite a few delays on our part have begun putting together our spring collection of mixes for you all. Ok so Eclectic Method isn’t technically from NYC, but WTF right?….(that was a subtle foreshadowing for part 2 of this post).  Eclectic Method is a Live A/V DJ (which means they mix audio and video live) trio originating in London and includes Jonny Wilson(the only member currently living in NYC), Ian Edgar and Geoff Gamlen.  Instead of me going on and on I encourage you to go to their website and read more:  www.eclecticmethod.com

AVDJing or VDJing or DVJing or whatever you want to call it is blowing up in most parts of the world.  Audio mixing is now only considered one dimension to a much larger realm of mixed media and Eclectic Method have known this and exploited it for over 6 years. U2, Fatboy Slim, and Public Enemy have employed their talented services, and if any of you are going to SXSW then be sure to email Eclectic Method to get into the private party as they tear into the Documentary: RIP: a remix Manifesto and remix it live on the dance floor!

It’s March 3rd, 3/03.

A few weeks back was the first time time I laid my hands on a real Roland TB303. I’ve heard it on records countless of times, tried to emulate it in softsynths, gave Rebirth a shot and bought some emulators. I thought it was all good. I was wrong. None of it was like touching it in its own flesh and -not so- cheap plastic glory.
The small little silver box is so tiny and cute – but it can scream and spit in your face, or purr like like a kitten rolling around on the ground. It weighs about two pounds with batteries, yet its influence on music history was heavy to say the least. It was meant to be a substitute for a bass player, however it ended up being the signature sound of a whole genre of music.
So on this day, let us pause for a few moments and pay tribute to this quirky little box and reflect on what it meant for us, the trips we were on, and the music we like to listen to. Happy 303 day everyone!

Just a friendly reminder that rightClique will be hosting the second installment of our Cerebral Sabbath series, an evening of IDM / Ambient influenced music featuring some Live PA and DJ sets from local talent happening Saturday night at Octane Coffee and Lounge on Marietta Street. We have some excellent sets lined up this weekend, and we are excited to welcome the DJ Tractor Pull, who many locals may already know as host of The Mobius on WREK FM. This is an all ages event and there is no cover. Octane will be serving up their usual fare of excellent coffees, as well as a wonderful selection of high-gravity beers, and a full liquor and wine bar. Any local gear heads are welcome to bring come join us as a part of the Cerebral Sabbath Choir, a mixture of open-mic and Live PA. We will be providing a 16 channel mixer (please bring the cabling you will need for your gear as we cannot guarantee we will have extra), and encourage anybody who is interested to join in more one large-scale collaborative mix to top off the evening.

For those who are not already in the know, rightClique’s own shortstack and Rowland have been hard at work lately on a new two-laptop DJ project called Crookhaven. Born out of the quick appreciation for the versus set performed at The Five Spot leading into New Years Eve week, Crookhaven has quickly gained notice in the local dubstep scene, and recently came off a busy weekend of playing rightClique’s own Bass Recreation Society and the Disco Biscuits after-party hosted by our friends from Euphonic Conceptions and Music Matters. Words sometimes are not the most appropriate conveyor of feelings. This one of those times. Charlie Cooper, half of the groundbreaking and emotionally charged electronic group Telefon Tel Aviv has passed away. The influence Charlie Cooper and bandmate Josh Eustis had on many of us affiliated with rightClique is enormous. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie’s family and friends, and those that he touched both as an individual and a musician.

Filastine is a nomad. He is always somewhere other than his home in Barcelona. Last year he found himself playing 60+ gigs around the globe in places like Osaka, Indonesia, Australia and London to name a few. His music is nomadic too, traveling across genre’s and collaborating with musicians he meets along the way. You can learn more from Filastine’s blog.
